Based on Henry James’ haunting novella, this enigmatic story examines one of Britten’s favorite themes: loss of innocence. Britten’s third chamber opera is written with a concise musical structure matching James’ precise writing style, even as the piece sparks a network of ambiguous connections and queries but refuses to tie up all loose ends.
Mills sings the role of Miss Jessel.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, this new opera is a coproduction with the Metropolitan Opera and will have its world premiere on the MAC stage.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Chabon, Bates and Scheer’s opera portrays two cousins in 1940s New York City—a refugee from wartime Prague and a closeted queer Brooklynite—who team up to create The Escapist, a comic book superhero who takes America by storm as he battles the Nazis and frees the oppressed.
As the opera unfolds, themes of identity, escape, and freedom are examined while three disparate musical worlds come crashing together.
Bates’ first opera, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, enjoyed its collegiate premiere at the Jacobs School of Music in 2018 as a coproduction with the Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, and San Francisco Opera.

Die Fledermaus, Johann Strauss II's 1874 comic operetta (based on a German farce) is a tale of revenge, mistaken identities, and romance run amuck. This exemplary Viennese confection will be presented with Jacobs musicians and singers together onstage in a semistaged presentation that may contain a surprise or two (think: extended party scene!).

In nineteenth-century Russia, Eugene Onegin is a sophisticated but cavalier bachelor who rejects young Tatiana’s naive confession of love. Bored, he tries to seduce his best friend’s betrothed, which unsurprisingly incites a duel in which Onegin kills his dear comrade.
Years later, Onegin “meets” lovely and cultured Tatiana and declares his love for her; it is the same Tatiana, now stylish, married, and happy. Though she still feels for Onegin, her marriage—and heart—will remain intact.
Enveloped in Tchaikovsky’s sweeping melodies, Onegin is left distraught and alone, one of Russian literature’s “superfluous men.”
